What it is
Replika, from Luka, launched in 2017 and was one of the first mainstream AI companion apps. You design a 3D avatar, name it, and chat with it as a friend or partner; it levels up as you talk, keeps a diary of “memories,” and supports voice calls and an augmented-reality mode.
It defined the category. The problem is that the category moved: newer companions built their reputations on long-term memory and proactive contact, and Replika’s recall — the thing a companion lives or dies on — is noticeably shallower.
Why it ranks here
- The original companion app, with years of polish on the basics
- Gentle, low-pressure onboarding for first-timers
- Avatar customization and voice calls are well done
- Memory and continuity trail the leaders it inspired
Pros & cons
Pros
- Easy, welcoming start for the AI-curious
- Customizable avatar with voice and AR modes
- Long track record — it isn’t going anywhere
Cons
- Forgets details and loops in conversation more than top rivals
- Much of the personality — relationship modes, voice calls — sits behind the Pro paywall
- A 2023 controversy, when romantic features were abruptly removed and then partly restored, dented user trust
Pricing
A free tier with basic chat, and a Pro subscription (monthly or annual) that unlocks voice calls, relationship modes, and fuller customization.
